I am traditionally trained in oil painting and I love to paint figures, especially Asian women of all ages. As an American born Korean I am deeply inspired by strong Korean women and want to celebrate their underrepresented natural form and anatomy. The deep emotions and psychology of being a diasporic Korean inspires me to feature Asian humans in my art which I believe are very uncommon in the fine arts world.

About

Soyon Kwon is an oil painter living in New York City. She studied traditional realism oil painting at the University of Washington in Seattle. She spreads positive energy through figure and plein air oil painting, drawing her life purpose from seeing reality as if for the first time, as a baby. She sees beauty in everything, especially the overlooked, and thus makes found object soft sculpture as well, creating new “creatures” from recycled fabric and stuffing.

The Process

I enjoyed researching poses and the facial expression for this artwork, and experimented a lot with the color. It was challenging to get the anatomy and proportions just right. The subtle differences between asian anatomy and other ethnicities has always been very interesting to me.
