Otentu Collection - Limited Edition

What is the relationship between our bodies and our every day life elements? Some of those elements are ‘traditional’ drawing techniques, such as graphite, carving and etching, but this creation is one in a series of personal sketches that uses objects I found around my studio. As a creator, there is a relationship between the body that I imagine and craft and the tools that create that expresses this imagination in physical form? Working manually with the printer, I started to explore this relationship through interactions between my skin and the different layers and techniques. Using my skin as the background for those interactions, those elements started becoming layers that would fixed themselves on the body in their own particular way, until becoming one. The results were obtained by working manually with the printer, alternating phases in which I would manipulate the images directly, with other phases less controlled where I would leave space to chance.
This is a piece from an 8-pieces creation that explore the physical involvement in the act of creation.

About

My academic training as an artist and anthropologist is based on the idea that our cultural environment defines our approach to the world and, therefore, informs our artistic practice. Following this idea, I understand art as inseparable from the social context in which it is created and developed.

This vision of art is embodied in my work by placing this link at the center of my artistic concerns. Due to its versatility and physicality, drawing soon became the ideal medium to approach my research on how our body relates to the environment. Drawing is movement, a gesture in space that connects us with our surroundings. But drawing is also the registration of those movements through mark-making. For the recording process of these gestures, I naturally combine conventional work tools such as paper, graphite, or charcoal with more current ones such as video or audio.
