The wave of new beginning

Tribal ocean inspired talisman for new beginnings, strong familian bonds and prosperity

This project was inspired by the Maori tribe in New Zealand who’s art included amulets and symbols inspired by nature.
The spiral wave is Koru, representing the unfurling fold that brings new life and purity to the world. also represents peace, tranquility and spirituality along with a strong sense of regrowth or new beginnings.

The Pikorua represents the many paths of life and love and as such is considered the original symbol of eternity. The twist in particular shows how the strength of the bond of friendship, loyalty and love will last forever.

The Hei-Matau are stylish fish hooks that represent strength, prosperity, abundance, fertility and great respect for the sea.
Its also said to provide good luck and safety when traveling across water and is therefore often worn by travelers.
I decided to combine all of these symbols into one talisman because each of them was exactly what I needed at that time.
I had just gotten married, I was pregnant and had all kinds of new beginnings in my life.
Whilst making this talisman I felt the incredible amount of power and energy these symbols have.
I believe that anyone wearing it will feel its power.

About

My name is Tania, I create jewelry inspired by the sea.
During a stay abroad, I was exposed to goldsmithing as a profession and immediately fell in love. The ability to create something delicate and unique from a rough and raw material like metal was magical to me.
I returned home and enrolled in Yael Shakdi's goldsmith's workshop.
During the years of my studies, I always searched to create jewelry that is inspired by the sea, I tried to connect every project I could to the realm of water - waves, plants, animals, and sea cultures.
Why the ocean? I have always loved water. At a young age I learned to dive and fell in love with the smell and beauty of the sea, the sound of the waves and the inner peace of being in the water. One of my goals in life is to help preserve the marine life environment.
Nowadays, all my free time is spent in the sea, whether I'm surfing or diving or just watching the waves come and go.
Through my art, I try to convey to you the breathtaking feeling I get when I think of the sea.

My biggest inspiration has always been the sea. I began researching cultures with a strong connection to nature and the sea in particular. My admiration to native cultures has led me to the Maori tribe, the people of which have beautiful symbols and amulets inspired by nature.
I have chosen the Koru (spiral), Pikorua (twist) and Hei Matau (fish hook) symbols because their meaning and virtues were things I wished for myself at the time.
The wave representing the Koru symbol was carved by hand in wax and later sent to be cast in 925 quality silver. A process in which the original wax carving is destroyed in order to create a single-use mold.
The Pikorua (twists) and Hei Matau (fish hook latch) were designed in a computer software and 3D printed in 925 quality silver.
