Rage - Folding Screen, 2022

For me, anger, or violence are not emotions that I can express or reveal. I think of them as ones I need to contain within myself. Before becoming an adult, I always revealed anger inside me. When I reflect on myself, I am a person with a lot of anger. However, while growing up, I reduced how much I exposed this anger, and this became a personal criteria of maturation. On the other hand, when I did, the way of doing so changed.
I made a folding screen for showing anger, or violence. A long time ago, folding screens were easily found in Asian countries. The meanings were usually about ‘blocking’ some things. Although it was a short experience in my teenage years, exposing anger always resulted in violence, creating a vicious cycle of escalating emotions. In the Rage, I wanted to show anger or violence as something that should be stopped or reduced with, and moreover, I wanted to show how this can result in the opportunity to mature.
