Lucky Bamboo
Despite Collection 2023
Whimsical still life with gold colored frame.
I bought all three of these plants on Valentine's day. The plant on the right was titled "Lucky Bamboo" at the plant shop. When I brought it home, my boyfriend, who grew up in Thailand, informed me it was not a bamboo plant.
People represent themselves falsely to appear more appealing. It is in our human nature to desire connection, acceptance, and community. To fit in, we may give ourselves false titles or repress parts of ourselves.
Lucky Bamboo plants are not true bamboo; they are a type of tropical water lily. When kept indoors, they will never flower, and most who purchase them may never know of their true identity. However, in their natural habitats, they bloom.

I really experimented with this piece. I wanted to bring in arbitrary colors and try loosening up brush strokes in some areas. My professor introduced me to the idea of dichotomies in art. I had never thought of the concept before. This piece helped me elevate my stylistic choices and changed the way I thought about painting.
