Internal Light

Despite Collection 2023

I created this diptych to tap into my inner sanctuary that gives me a deep sense of freedom to express and exist. I was inspired to create an interpretation of this moment of self-liberation through bold vibrant colors, fluid shapes, and mirrored symmetry. These elements reflect the inner and outer relation to my identity, spirituality and ancestry. I began with acrylic paint to build brightness, then switched to oil to be better manipulate and render the illustration. This creation is a reminder of the richness that comes with using art to express oneself or to explore identity. With the surrounding flames representing the burning rage of climate change and social justice crises, these figures give the viewer a chance to experience a sense of calmness throughout a very chaotic environment. Their closed eyes elaborate on the need for a moment to pause and rest to gather internal wisdom which will help us move forward with bold courage and clarity.

About

My work is a direct reflection of my journey exploring my queer identity as an artist of color and community activist. I create to be visible and to understand my inner spirituality, authenticity, and connection to the natural world, as well as to connect and show up for my Detroit community.

Embracing and acknowledging my own vulnerability, humanity and creativity has strengthened my clarity to use my art as a medium to express the challenges and harm marginalized groups withstand and endure daily such as death, grief, poverty, homophobia, lack of safe spaces and resources. My creative values and entrepreneurship is rooted in the liberation of all people through social resilience and revolution, art empowerment, and the preservation of BIPOC culture.

I incorporate elements of calmness, queerness, symmetry, Abstract Expressionism, surrealism, and healing into my work to combat the clutter, chaos, and unrest caused by our industrial society. I find my voice and passion through illustrating, painting, printmaking, mural work, sculpting, and community arts engagement. Additionally I am inspired by the diverse methods and limitless materials that can be used to create art with conventional and digital tools.
