I wanted this piece to be raw and gritty - textured, like an ancient memory. To achieve this, I re-stretched the canvas, so I could work on an unprimed, raw canvas. In this way, I knew the oil paint would behave differently: in some areas fading into the canvas, and in other areas clumping together and sitting on top. I also wanted to depict the characters as they would be in a faint memory - more of a gesture, not in complete detail. It was important for me to capture them in a childish, simplified fashion as well - this to capture Emily recalling a story she had been told with innocent, detached eyes.
