Growing With Savannah

Despite Collection 2023

I created Growing With Savannah to illustrate my journey upon moving to Savannah Georgia to start the next chapter of my life. In the fall, I started attending the Savannah College of Art and Design. I have already grown so much as an artist since being here. I have also seen improvements in my mental health as well as overall attitude. I have also spent time researching some of the historic significance that Savannah has to offer. I think I am similar to Savannah in many ways. The main similarity is that both the city of Savannah and I have a past with some dark moments and experiences but as new ideas and changes are introduced, improvements can be made without destroying the original beauty. I used a program on my iPad called procreate to create this artwork. I used a digital medium so I could best Illustrate the underlying magical feel within the background.

About

I am inspired by people and how they interact with the environment around them. Everyone encounters their own unique circumstances, so I love meeting new people and discovering their specific story that they have to tell. My art is simply a visual way to communicate their story without using words.

I started out by creating a rough sketch of the tree, fountain, and buildings. I rendered each of these elements on different layers while using different brushes to create a variety of textures. My favorite part about creating this piece was adding the highlights and shadows within the branches of the tree, because I could see the realism slowly seeping into the overall artwork. I also enjoyed creating the smooth texture on the fountain compared to the rough texture of the tree. I think the addition of the Spanish moss really tied the whole piece together because it is very recognizable throughout Savannah.
