Fun in the Sun (and Other Tragic Events)

To implode for everyone to see.

In this piece, I am taking an active role in the destruction of our star. Perhaps my fear has turned into rage. Maybe the “easiest” way to deal with a specific fear is to kill it. Yet, violence often only leads to more violence. As the saying goes, “hurt people, hurt people” (or in this case, hurt astronomical objects hurt people). So, here I am, killing the sun, and it implodes in a violent manner. Not only am I not immune to its destruction, but as indicated by the plants, set aflame next to me, I am also responsible for the destruction of those near me. This is what happens when you try to destroy your fears in a blind rage. You end up hurting yourself and others. Destruction is not the solution for something so complex.

About

Emma “M” Dailey is a junior at the Cleveland Institute of Art, double majoring in Painting and Sculpture + Expanded Media.

The core of Dailey’s work is human fragility, as they attempt to reason their way through this silly little universe.

Dailey’s work is often introspective. Dailey is a survivor of multiple instances of sexual assault, and their art is a vessel to communicate the anger and confusion that comes with such a title.

Dailey is also puppeteer and avid puppet designer, and hopes to one day spread their ideas about healing from such events through the art form.

They also hate the sun.

I was really frustrated at first with this piece. I was being far too uptight with it, and the key was to really let loose and have fun with its dramatic comedy.
