The Enjoyment of Fruit and Our Need to Sexualize Our Surroundings

Sexualizing the world around you and thinking of sexual things is common for us all. We see something phallic and, well, we pretty much all think of the same body part. Anyways, when it comes to food, to me it always felt like someone was sexualizing it in some way. May it be the way the person is eating it, holding it, or describing it. Seeing people doing this around me, I thought that so much of this has to do with its presentation and it being shown to you in this way. I wanted to test this out for myself and show that eating fruits and vegetables isn't the only way to enjoy them.

For this project, I gave each fruit and vegetable the spotlight. I gave it a seamless backdrop, strobe lights, and it time to shine. For medium, I used the photo process called wet collodion tintypes to enhance the sensual feeling and give these food items a more unique appearance. Each piece is one of a kind; I am turning 3.5 x 4.5 sheets of black painted aluminum into film, making the series that much more interesting.

Wet Collodion Tintypes, frame, optium museum acrylic

This is my first series of work using the wet collodion tintype process. It was a little nerve wrecking, since I learned how to do these on my own but it was a lot of fun. I learned I need to set up a darkroom closer to where I am shooting, and the importance of gloves. I hope to continue this series but on a larger scale. I also loved that I always had a snack at the end of the shoot.
