Dreams of dreams

Despite Collection 2023

This painting comes from dreams of american empire receding peacefully into balance with nature. In particular, I drew inspiration from the National Arboretum, outside of DC, where the original corinthian columns of the capital stand on a plinth without walls or roof, facing a reflecting pool in an open field. The place is extremely beautiful, and the image of fragments of empire laid to rest in nature has stuck with me, occupying my dreams and daydreams. My hometown of Pittsburgh is a hotbed of this type of scene, with lush northeastern underbrush overtaking the rusting carcass of American manufacturing. There is a wistfulness about anything grand fading away, but I find a lot of hope in these scenes as well. In this painting I set out to capture that feeling.

About

Julia is an artist and educator based in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn. Her practice emerges from meditations on self and ecosystem, and is informed by her love of comics, architecture, and abstract expressionism.

Julia hails from Pittsburgh and moved to New York in 2014 to study architecture at Cooper Union. Throughout her education and following it, Julia involved herself in design projects across the city. After graduation she co-founded an art and design collective, DNA which was honored to receive Space Saloon’s Desaturated fellowship, as well as Taller Ken’s Fundamentals design fellowship.

With time, Julia’s design practice evolved to include and finally focus on painting both as a vehicle for personal expression and exploration, and eventually of community building. Painting emerged in her life as a means to process emotional transformations and re-center and expand personal identity. Intuitively she sought to share what she was experiencing in the studio, and began leading creative workshops and painting events throughout New York.

The specific composition for this painting comes out of my journal-style sketchbook practice. I make loose drawings daily as an outlet for visual signals that rise up from the corners of experience.
