Donut Coral, 2021

What does texture mean to you? How do you feel it with your eyes or with your fingers? As an artist, texture has always been something that stood out to me. Whether it is part of a wall, cracks along the ground, or in this case; a closeup of what I like to call Donut Coral. This piece was created as a one-layer screenprint based on a photo I took while scuba diving at around 50ft underwater. At this depth, many bright colors are removed, and the main thing that grabbed my attention is the interesting texture. The absence of colors allowed the texture to enhance the experience and shine through. This coral was several feet across and covered in small bumps that curved up and out of the surface, then dipped down in the center. I took a photo of a section that was only a few inches across. The rest of this process was an experiment of adding and subtracting information, and how far I could push it into the abstract while still being recognizable. The final outcome is a combination of nature and my imagination to create an expression of texture as life.
