I created the art piece "A Time of Sorrow" to capture the sorrow and mourning felt after the shooting at the University of Virginia on November 13th, 2022, where I was sheltering in place at the time. The rotunda, a place of strength and resilience, is featured in the work as a reminder of the community's strength in the face of adversity. This artwork is a way for me to commemorate the lives of those affected by the shooting, and to recognize the strength of the University of Virginia community, as well as the power of resilience and hope in the face of tragedy.

The Process

The highlights of the process for me included researching and understanding the University of Virginia and its history, as well as the details of the shooting and its aftermath. Additionally, I found it exciting to explore the various creative techniques I could use to best convey the emotions of the piece. Finally, I learned that art can be a powerful tool for remembering and honoring the lives of those affected by tragedy, while also representing the strength of the community as a whole.
