A Bite of Perseverance
Despite Collection 2023
This piece is inspired by my personal struggles with mental health and self-doubt. It depicts a young woman, myself, in a trance-like state whose eyes are completely glossed over. She has her head tilted upward slightly with flies surrounding her open mouth. There are 5 insect wings that are fanned out behind her head and rest over a loose overlapping patterned background. Her teeth have morphed into one, and her tongue is not present. The absence of a tongue and the unification of the teeth symbolize my difficulty speaking out loud. The wings and patterns in the background are visual representations of the buzzing and pattern/light flashes that occur when the anxiety becomes too much for me to function. Causing me to be completely overstimulated to the point I can not hear of see anything clearly. The flies are symbols of perseverance, continuation, and change. The wish to consume them symbolizes strength and determination even despite the obstacles faced in daily life. This creation is greatly significant as it is a representation of my willingness to continue forth even though the path forward is not crystal clear.
